What is foot care?

Foot care is when cleaning your feet or inspecting the feet of someone else. Check your feet before, during and after the treatment of your feet. Foot care is important in helping to avoid problems like open sores. People with conditions like diabetes or poor blood flow are expected to take care of their foot every day.

How do I wash the feet?

When you wipe someone else’s feet, wear gloves.

Use a bathtub, shower, or large basin. Check the temperature of the water with your wrist. Make sure that the water is in normal condition not too hot or too cold.

Place under the feet a towel or waterproof pad for washing.

Wash the entire foot, especially between each toe. Do not use antibacterial soaps. These soaps may be too strong and cause skin dryness and irritation.

Rinse the feet with warm water.

Dry the feet completely, including between the toes.

Rub lotion on the feet. Do not apply lotion between the toes.

How do I check the feet?

Look at the tops and bottoms of the feet, between the toes, and around the toenails. Use a mirror to take a closer look at the bottom of the foot.

Look for any changes in skin color, such as redness.

Check for tenderness or sores.

Check for cold or swollen feet, burning, tingling, or numbness.

Do a foot check after exercise, and after walking.

When should I contact my healthcare provider?

You notice new changes, such as a sore.

You have question or concerns about your condition or care.
